We all have our reasons for working full-time. I’ve heard some people say they love their job so much, that it doesn’t even feel like work. On the other hand, I’ve also encountered those who hate their jobs but they go to work every day because the pay is decent.
Im not sure a paycheck is the best reason to go to work. Personally, it’s difficult for me to work in an environment where I’m unhappy. If I can’t feel good about what I do and the environment in which Im employed, I start looking for another job ASAP. There’s a part of me that wishes I could work somewhere solely for the money, but I’m simply not programed that way.
I can’t say that having this disposition always leaves me in the best state financially, but at least I feel good inside. When I was making the most money at a particular company, I just didn’t feel good going to work every day. I didn’t get along with my manager and I didn’t believe in the mission. I had anxiety all the time and was always stressed out.
My mom worked a job for 20 years and she hated it for most of those years. I know I couldn’t do the same. But in the end, she got the pension. I think about that too. With me switching jobs all the time looking for the “perfect” fit, I lose out on tenure.
It’s a delicate balance this career thing. I have come to the conclusion, that eventually, Im going to have to go into business for myself.
What about you? How do you rate quality of life vs pay?
